India to Host 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships

BHUBANESWAR — India has secured the hosting rights for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, bringing the premier international track and field event to the subcontinent for the first time. World Athletics selected Bhubaneswar to host the competition following a high-level council meeting in Torun, Poland.
The selection highlights India’s rising influence in international athletics and reflects recent multi-million-dollar investments in modern sports infrastructure across the country.
A Competitive Victory over Global Bids
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), supported by the Odisha state government, led the successful bidding strategy. India won the hosting rights after outperforming competing bids from traditional sporting nations, including New Zealand.
World Athletics Vice President Adille Sumariwalla formally announced the decision in Poland, concluding a rigorous multi-stage review.
A critical phase in the evaluation took place in January 2026, when a two-person technical committee from World Athletics inspected the Kalinga Stadium Complex in Bhubaneswar. Delegations reviewed the venue’s technical layout, warm-up zones, and specialized track surfaces before giving final approval.
The “Neeraj Chopra Effect” and India’s Strategic Ambitions
AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo attributed the successful bid to India’s recent performance breakthroughs on the international circuit. He noted that the global profile generated by javelin champion Neeraj Chopra’s World and Olympic titles has reshaped perception of India’s athletic capabilities.
“The allotment of the World Athletics 2028 Indoor Athletics Championships to India marks the growing stature of Indian athletics,” Sagoo said.
The 2028 event is a core component of India’s broader strategy to secure major international sporting events ahead of a planned bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. Concurrent hosting bids include:
